Dec 6, DETROIT, MICHIGAN (WED) — With Emilio Estevez’s new movie “Bobby” now showing in theatres everywhere, there is a renewed interest in the life and vision of Robert F. Kennedy. Probably most devotees aren’t aware Kennedy was taught how to chant the maha-mantra. The following story is taken from Lekhasravanti devi dasi’s book, Putting the World Together: My Father Walter Reuther – The Liberal Warrior.

“Now what’s supposed to happen?” Kennedy asked.

“It’s a magic spell for the preservation of the planet,” the poet answered.

Kennedy grinned, “You ought to sing it to the guy up the street,” motioning to the White House and its occupant, LBJ. “He needs it more than I do.”

“The same summer I learned to chant Hare Krishna, counterculture poet Allen Ginsberg taught the mantra to Bobby Kennedy in Washington. Ginsberg had learned the chant while touring India. With the musical support of his harmonium, he sang, “Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Hare, Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama, Rama, Hare, Hare.”
